Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Upper Makefield directly borders the historic village Washington Crossing. The Washington Crossing Inn is a beautifully preserved 1817 colonial home located next to the site of George Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Night in 1776. The Inn pairs an elegant menu of steaks, seafood, salads, and pasta dishes with imported and Californian wines. The Washington Crossing Inn also offers a high tea service with gourmet savory eats and sweet treats, including lemon and raisin scones, fresh fruit tart, and orange chocolate cheesecake.

The nearby Original Dominick’s Pizzeria is a local favorite for hand-tossed pizzas prepared with freshly made dough and topped with whole milk mozzarella and homemade pizza sauce. Colonial Farms is an upscale grocery store, deli, and bakery selling custom cakes, delicious hot hoagies, and grilled sandwiches. Ely Farm is a fine choice for sampling the bountiful produce of Bucks County’s bucolic farmland. Ely Farm has won numerous awards for its beef, pork, and cheese products. The farm shop at Ely Farm opens from Thursday through Sunday, with specialties including hickory smoked ham and bacon, smoked pork chops, artisanal European-style cheeses, and signature honey bologna.

Things to Do

George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River was one of the most significant events of the American Revolutionary War. The anniversary of this event is marked every year on Christmas morning with the Crossing Reenactment.

The Upper Makefield Fire Company’s Annual Carnival is a springtime highlight featuring fun rides and delicious eats from local farms and restaurants. Just north of Upper Makefield, the 125-foot Bowman’s Hill Tower provides sweeping views from a stone tower built in the 1920s to commemorate George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River.

The nearby Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve has dozens of trails winding through a pretty 134-acre botanical garden with a variety of diverse habitat areas. On the opposite bank of the Delaware River in New Jersey, Washington Crossing State Park extends across an area of 3,575 acres. This sprawling state park features a 140-acre area of hardwood forests and fields, plus 13 miles of scenic nature trails, which can be used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

During the warmer months, Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre stages concerts and plays. The Johnson Ferry House is a faithfully preserved 1740s farmhouse at Washington Crossing State Park. George Washington and other Revolutionary Army officers stayed in prior to their crossing of Delaware.
